Pumpkin Shopping

The fall decorations are out and the air is heavy with nostalgic undertones. It doesn't get cold here, but still the light changes and people start to act a little giddy with the smell of fall coming in. I can finally take out the footed pajamas for Linc and the head-to-toe cartoon advertisements that Nico sleeps in during the colder months.

With three birthdays in October, it feels like the holiday season starts early for us. My mind jumps ahead to warm cider, to the Trail of Lights and teaching Nico Christmas carols. I am reminded how nice it is to see people in sweaters and the telltale scent of the heater starting up for the first time.

I think we are going to buy pumpkins tonight with Barry and Wendi. It something so simple and so reassuring. Instead of listening to the candidates quibble back and forth like disgruntled thirteen year olds or watching CNN's hourly reassessment of the severity of the economic crisis, we can study the simple perfection of our new acquisition. Is this one too tall? Too flat on one side? This one has a black mark, but I think we can hide it against the house.

One of the nicest things about having young children is the blanket permission to indulge yourself in their innocent wonder. It is perfectly natural to lose yourself to the engineering of a Lego city for an afternoon or roll around in the grass for an hour without caring that your hair or shirt or socks might be getting dirty. So, I might not have much of a social life right now, but I do have a date with a pumpkin, and I couldn't be happier about it.
