Countdown to the Big Weekend

The countdown has begun for the big weekend: we have the 6-Man Birthday on Saturday and the Buddy Walk on Sunday. The 6-Man Birthday is a celebration of all the boys/men in the family who have birthdays around this month. For the record, that includes Grandpa Larry, Barron, Lincoln, Nico, Sam, and Barry. Since we haven't been able to have a proper party for Nico or Linc ever, and for Sam in several years, we decided to organize a huge joint extravaganza this year.

The next day is the Buddy Walk to raise awareness for Down syndrome, and I am getting so excited -- and a little nervous -- to go. I can't wait to meet all of the other families going through what we are going through, and I am thrilled to get to show Lincoln off to everyone. Yet, there is the lingering fear that it will be overwhelming for us. It is sometimes easier to just not focus on the Down syndrome part and focus on who Lincoln is right now. We decided right at the beginning not to worry about things several steps down the path, but just to focus on today and what we have on our plate for that one day.

Will it be hard to see what's coming? Will it revive old fears about his future and the perception of him in society? I hope not, but if it does, we will just have to start at the beginning and re-focus on one day at a time. And maybe it will do just the opposite; maybe it will relieve those fears when I see all of the other happy, thriving families. I guess another way to think of it is that maybe, seeing our happy, thriving family, someone else will have their fears relieved. No way to find out but to show up.

Liz and Sam - You have a beautiful family! It has been such an inspiration sharing your joys these past two weeks. You both have a gift for capturing feelings with words - it's refreshing and heartbreaking all at once. Just wanted to let you know that I am reading (for what it's worth) and loving your precious little Linc right along with you. Thank you for sharing him!
